Summer Repertory Theatre (SRT) was founded in the summer of 1972 by Frank Zwolinski. “Uncle” Frank, a successful teacher and scenic designer, conceived of a summer stock theatre and training program housed by the Santa Rosa Junior College. 

Summer Repertory became a prominent west coast theatre company and helped young theatre artists further their careers. Frank retired in 2005 and handed the reins to James Newman, who ran the program until 2023. James expanded the student base by recruiting actors and technicians from all over the US, facilitated the complete renovation of the theatre facility, and increased the company’s national reputation. 

In 2023, the Santa Rosa Junior College’s administration made the unfortunate decision to suspend Summer Repertory Theatre, ending 50 successful years of bringing the love of theatre to both student and 20,000 + local theatre patrons each summer.

This archive is meant to maintain the history of Summer Rep and highlight the incredible work, live-changing memories and legacy of this beloved program. It will be updated as we accumulate more photos, details and remembrances.
